Every Race on Amelia Island, From a Local Who’s Run Them

I’ve been running on this island for years — logging miles on the beach, through Fort Clinch, and along the Egans Creek Greenway in every season. One of the things I love about the Amelia Island running community is the steady rhythm of races throughout the year. We’re not a huge city, but we’ve got a solid calendar with something for everyone, from first-time 5K runners to half marathon veterans.

Here’s the complete breakdown of every annual race on the island, with the details you actually need.

Annual Race Calendar

Cannon Ball Run — Early January

Distances: Half Marathon, 5K Location: Main Beach Park, Fernandina Beach Typical Date: First Saturday in January

The year kicks off with the Cannon Ball Run. It’s organized by Amelia Island Runners and starts at Main Beach Park. January weather here is usually in the mid-60s — genuinely ideal racing conditions. The course shares DNA with the old Reindeer Run route, winding through residential neighborhoods with tree-lined streets. If you’re looking for a flat, fast half marathon to start the new year, this is it.

Amelia Island Half Marathon — February AND October

Distances: Half Marathon, 12K, 5K, Seaside Challenge Location: Main Beach Park, 32 N Fletcher Ave Produced by: Capstone Races Time Limit: 3:40 (approximately 16:45/mile pace)

This is the flagship race on the island, and it happens twice a year. The course is legitimately beautiful — you run through historic Fernandina Beach, into Old Town past the Amelia Island Lighthouse area, and through the shady roads of Fort Clinch State Park with ocean views. The surface alternates between pavement and dirt/grass greenway trail sections, which keeps your legs honest.

The February edition is great for a winter escape race if you’re coming from up north. The October edition catches the fall cool-down when temps drop back into the 70s. Both sell out, so register early. The Seaside Challenge combines multiple distances over the race weekend for the overachievers among us.

Pirates on the Run 5K — March

Distance: 5K Location: TBD (varies by year) Organized by: Amelia Island Runners

March brings the pirate-themed 5K, a nod to Amelia Island’s history as the only U.S. location to have had eight different flags fly over it (yes, that includes a couple of pirate flags). It’s a fun community 5K organized by Amelia Island Runners. Expect costumes, a good vibe, and a fast course.

Doug Stuber Memorial Turtle Trot 5K — Spring/Summer

Distance: 5K Location: TBD (varies by year)

The Turtle Trot is a spring/summer tradition honoring Doug Stuber’s legacy in the local running community. It coincides with sea turtle nesting season on the island — loggerheads start nesting on our beaches in May. The race is low-key and well-supported, a true community event.

Firecracker 5K — July 4th

Distances: 5K Run/Walk (chip-timed), Kids 1-Mile Fun Run Location: Racquet Park Conference Center Date: July 4 every year

Running a 5K on July 4th in northeast Florida is not for the faint of heart. Expect ~90°F and 80% humidity by mid-morning. But that’s part of the charm — you earn those fireworks. The chip-timed 5K starts early before the worst of the heat, and the kids’ 1-mile fun run makes it a family affair. I’ll be honest: this one hurts, but crossing the finish line on Independence Day morning is worth it.

Omni Turkey Trot 5K — Thanksgiving

Distance: 5K Location: Omni Amelia Island Resort & Spa Date: Thanksgiving morning

The Thanksgiving morning tradition. The Omni Resort hosts this 5K on their grounds, and the course takes advantage of the resort’s on-site trail network. It’s a good way to bank some miles before the feast. The resort setting is beautiful, and you’ll see a mix of locals and resort guests lining up together. Register through the Omni directly.

Reindeer Run — December

Distances: 5K, Half Marathon Location: Residential neighborhoods and Egans Creek Greenway

The year ends with the Christmas-themed Reindeer Run. This is one of my favorite local races because the course runs through neighborhoods where residents come out with carolers, hot chocolate, and decorations — it feels like running through a holiday card. The Egans Creek Greenway section adds a nature element, winding along the creek through 300+ acres of conservation land. Another Amelia Island Runners production.

Registration & Planning Tips

Where to register: Most races use RunSignUp for registration. The definitive, always-updated calendar lives at ameliarunners.com/race-calendar, maintained by Amelia Island Runners.

When to register: The Amelia Island Half Marathon (both editions) sells out. Register as early as possible. The local 5Ks are more relaxed but still fill up, especially the Turkey Trot and Reindeer Run.

What to expect course-wise: Almost every race on the island is flat — we’re a barrier island averaging 10-13 feet above sea level. The exception is if a course routes through Fort Clinch State Park, where the multi-use trail has surprisingly rolling dune hills. Surfaces vary from road to sidewalk to packed dirt greenway trail.

Weather by race season:

  • January (Cannon Ball Run): Highs ~65°F, lows ~45°F. Perfect racing weather. Dress in layers for the start.
  • February/October (Half Marathon): February is similar to January. October is warmer (70-85°F) but comfortable, especially for an early start.
  • March-May (Pirates, Turtle Trot): Warming up through the 70s and 80s. Very pleasant.
  • July (Firecracker): Hot. ~90°F, 78-81% humidity. Hydrate aggressively. Start early.
  • November (Turkey Trot): Cooling back down to 70-75°F. Comfortable.
  • December (Reindeer Run): Similar to January — cool and ideal.

Joining the community: If you’re a local or frequent visitor, join Amelia Island Runners. Founded in 2004, they organize most of the local races and host free weekly group runs every Wednesday from 6:00-7:00 PM at the Fernandina Beach High School track (435 Citrona Drive). All paces welcome.
