Amelia Island Running FAQ
I get asked the same questions constantly — by friends visiting the island, by people who find me on Strava, and by runners planning trips to northeast Florida. Here are honest answers to everything, from someone who runs here every day.
What are the best routes for beginners?
Three great options, all flat and easy to follow:
-
Amelia Island Trail — 6.2 miles of flat, paved, 10-foot-wide asphalt under a live oak canopy. Start at Peters Point Beachfront Park (free parking) and run as far as you want before turning around. Water fountains at Drummond Point Park and Canopy Crossing.
-
The beach at low tide — Park at Main Beach (free) and run near the waterline where sand is firmest. Go north toward Fort Clinch or south toward Peters Point. Completely flat, and the scenery is hard to beat. Check NOAA Station 8720030 for tides.
-
Fort Clinch paved park road — 3.3 miles of smooth pavement under a shady live oak canopy inside Fort Clinch State Park. Out and back for 6.6 miles. The $2 pedestrian entrance fee is worth it.
When is the best time of year to visit for running?
March, April, October, November, and December. Temperatures range from 65-80°F with moderate humidity. December through February is the prime running season — cool, dry, low rainfall.
Avoid June through August unless you train in heat. Summer means 90°F, 80% humidity, and daily afternoon thunderstorms.
If I had to pick one month: March. Perfect temps, low humidity, spring blooms, minimal rain.
Is it safe to run here?
Yes. Amelia Island is a small, quiet barrier island community. The safety concerns are natural, not human:
- Alligators live in all freshwater and brackish water on the island, including Egans Creek and retention ponds. Keep 60+ feet of distance. Don’t run with headphones at max volume near water.
- Jellyfish are common on the beach in summer (ocean temps above 85°F). Washed-up ones can still sting.
- Lightning is the biggest weather danger. May through September, afternoon storms are sudden. If you hear thunder, get off the beach and out from under trees immediately.
- Heat in summer can be dangerous. Hydrate aggressively and run early morning or evening.
Standard runner safety applies — carry a phone, be visible at dawn and dusk, tell someone your route.
Where do I park?
Free parking:
- Main Beach Park (large lot, most popular)
- Peters Point Beachfront Park
- Downtown Fernandina Beach streets and lots
- Drummond Point Park (Amelia Island Trail access)
Paid parking:
- Fort Clinch State Park: $6/vehicle (2-8 people), $4 single-occupant, $2 pedestrian
- Amelia Island State Park: $3/vehicle
Can I run on the beach?
Absolutely — it’s one of the best things about Amelia Island. Thirteen miles of car-free Atlantic beach. No vehicles allowed (unlike Daytona and other Florida beaches). Run within 1-2 hours of low tide for firm sand near the waterline. High tide can eliminate runnable sand in narrow sections.

What about wildlife?
You’ll see plenty of wildlife, especially on the trails and greenway:
- Birds: Herons, egrets, ospreys, pelicans. The Egans Creek Greenway is on the Florida Birding Trail.
- Dolphins: Visible from the beach, especially at dawn and dusk.
- Alligators: Present in all freshwater. Egans Creek Greenway is their territory. Keep your distance (60+ feet).
- Sea turtles: Nest on the beach May through October. Watch for marked nests and give them space.
- Jellyfish: Beach in summer. Avoid touching even dead ones.
- Snakes: Possible on Fort Clinch and Greenway trails. Stay on marked paths.
- Mosquitoes/no-see-ums: Worst at dawn/dusk in marshy areas during summer. Bug spray recommended for Greenway and nature trail runs.
Are there running groups I can join?
Amelia Island Runners (AIR) is the local club, founded in 2004. They host free weekly group runs every Wednesday from 6:00-7:00 PM at the Fernandina Beach High School track (435 Citrona Drive). All paces welcome, and visitors are encouraged to join. They also organize several local races throughout the year.

Where are the water fountains?
Water is available at:
- Main Beach Park
- Peters Point Beachfront Park
- Fort Clinch State Park (visitor center area)
- Amelia Island State Park
- Drummond Point Park (on the Amelia Island Trail)
- Canopy Crossing (on the AIT, also has WiFi)
- Downtown Fernandina Beach (various businesses and public facilities)
No water fountains: Egans Creek Greenway, the beach itself, Fort Clinch trails (away from visitor center). Carry a handheld bottle for these areas.
What shoes should I wear?
Depends on the surface:
- Amelia Island Trail, sidewalks, roads: Standard road running shoes.
- Beach: Trail shoes with moderate tread, or road shoes (expect sand). Barefoot is fine for short runs — watch for shells and jellyfish.
- Fort Clinch multi-use trail: Trail shoes recommended. The surface is sandy dirt with roots, and the rolling dune terrain benefits from grip.
- Egans Creek Greenway: Trail shoes or road shoes both work. The surface is mowed grass, which can be muddy after rain.
Are there guided running tours?
Yes. Peg Leg Running Tours with Rob Hicks — a 3.25-mile route through historic downtown Fernandina Beach. Rob is a local historian and author of two books on Florida history. The tour starts at the Peg Leg Pete statue near the docks, and you’ll learn the full “Isle of Eight Flags” history. Run at your own pace; walking is welcome. Highly rated on TripAdvisor.

Is the island flat?
Almost entirely. Amelia Island averages 10-13 feet above sea level. The beach, Amelia Island Trail, Egans Creek Greenway, and downtown are all pancake-flat.
The one exception: Fort Clinch State Park’s 6-mile multi-use trail has rolling dune hills that are surprisingly legitimate for coastal Florida. It’s not mountain running, but you’ll feel elevation changes you didn’t expect.
Do I need bug spray?
For the beach, roads, paved trails, and downtown: no. For the Egans Creek Greenway or Fort Clinch nature trails at dawn or dusk in summer: yes. Mosquitoes and no-see-ums can be aggressive in marshy areas when it’s warm and still.
Can I run from downtown to Fort Clinch?
Yes, and it’s a great route. Fort Clinch’s entrance is about 2 miles north of downtown via Atlantic Avenue. Once inside the park ($2 pedestrian fee), you’ve got 3.3 miles of paved road, 6 miles of off-road trail, and beach access. A downtown-to-Fort-Clinch-and-back run with some trail added easily hits 8-12 miles.
Where should I run at sunrise?
The beach, every time. Amelia Island’s beach faces east over the Atlantic Ocean. Main Beach Park and Peters Point both have free parking and are perfect launch points. Fort Clinch Beach is quieter if you want solitude. Time it to start 20 minutes before sunrise at low tide — golden light on firm sand, dolphins in the surf, and nobody else around. It’s the single best running experience on the island.
How do I check the tides?
NOAA Station 8720030 — Fernandina Beach, FL. Bookmark this link: tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov. Tides are semi-diurnal (two highs and two lows per day). Run the beach within 1-2 hours of low tide for the best sand conditions.
Is there a running store on Amelia Island?
No dedicated running store on the island. Stock up before you arrive. The closest good running store is 1st Place Sports in Jacksonville, about 35 minutes south — one of the best running stores in the Southeast. They carry a full range of shoes, gear, and local race info.
Can I bring my dog running?
Dogs are allowed on Amelia Island beaches but must be on a leash. Fort Clinch State Park allows leashed dogs on the paved park road but not on all trails — check at the entrance. The Egans Creek Greenway is dog-friendly on leash. The Amelia Island Trail welcomes leashed dogs. The residential north-end neighborhoods are also great for dog-friendly runs with sidewalks and shade.
Clean up after your dog and carry water for them — there are no dog-specific water stations on the routes.
